  • 9 Mergenthaler, Ottmar

    SUBJECT AREA: Paper and printing
    [br]
    b. 11 May 1854 Hachtel, Germany
    d. 28 October 1899 Baltimore, Maryland, USA
    [br]
German/American inventor of the Linotype typesetting machine.
    [br]
Mergenthaler came from a family of teachers, but following a mechanical bent he was apprenticed to a clockmaker. Having served his time, Mergenthaler emigrated to the USA in 1872 to avoid military service. He immediately secured work in Washington, DC, in the scientific instrument shop of August Hahl, the son of his former master. He steadily acquired a reputation for skill and ingenuity, and in 1876, when Hahl transferred his business to Baltimore, Mergenthaler went too. Soon after, they were commissioned to remedy the defects in a model of a writing machine devised by James O.Clephane of Washington. It produced print by typewriting, which was then multiplied by lithography. Mergenthaler soon corrected the defects and Clephane ordered a full-size version. This was completed in 1877 but did not work satisfactorily. Nevertheless, Mergenthaler was moved to engage in the long battle to mechanize the typesetting stage of the printing process. Clephane suggested substituting stereotyping for lithography in his device, but in spite of their keen efforts Mergenthaler and Hahl were again unsuccessful and they abandoned the project. In spare moments Mergenthaler continued his search for a typesetting machine. Late in 1883 it occurred to him to stamp matrices into type bars and to cast type metal into them in the same machine. From this idea, the Linotype machine developed and was completed by July 1884. It worked well and a patent was granted on 26 August that year, and Clephane and his associates set up the National Typographic Company of West Virginia to manufacture it. The New York Tribune ordered twelve Linotypes, and on 3 July 1886 the first of these set part of that day's issue. During the previous year the company had passed into the hands of a group of newspaper owners; increasing differences with the Board led to Mergenthaler's resignation in 1888, but he nevertheless continued to improve the machine, patenting over fifty modifications. The Linotype, together with the Monotype of Tolbert Lanston, rapidly supplanted earlier typesetting methods, and by the 1920s it reigned supreme, the former being used more for newspapers, the latter for book work.

  • 10 Watkins, Alfred

    [br]
    b. 1854 Hereford, England
    d. 7 April 1935 Hereford, England
    [br]
English photographer who developed the first practical exposure-measuring system.
    [br]
His first patent was granted on 27 January 1890 and described a method of measuring the "actinic" value of light as a means of determining exposure. A strip of sensitized paper which darkened on exposure to light was used, and the time taken for it to darken to match a standard tint was measured. This time could be used to calculate the necessary exposure time, taking into account the speed of the plate, shutter speed and aperture. Watkins marketed a number of these actinometer designs, of which the most popular was the Watkins Bee Meter, which was in a pocket-watch form, introduced in 1903 and remaining on sale until 1939. Watkins was concerned that photographers recognize that exposure measurement had to take into account the effect of development time and temperature. In 1893 he devised the concept of the "Watkins Factor": he showed that when plates were developed by inspection, as was the practice at the time, a fixed relationship existed between the time of the first appearance of the image and the total time required to give a fully developed negative. The Watkins Factor was the figure that the first time must be multiplied by to give the second time. Watkins published tables of factors for different brands of plates and for different developers, and marketed various aids such as specially calibrated thermometers and clocks, as aids in using "Fac-torial Development" to give consistent negatives. After the early years of the twentieth century Watkins gave up direct participation in photography and devoted his time to a variety of interests, including the plotting of ley lines in England.

    SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology
    [br]
    b. 3 September 1710 Geneva, Switzerland
    d. 12 May 1784 Petit Sacconex, Switzerland
    [br]
Swiss philosopher and experimental zoologist, pioneer of tissue grafting.
    [br]
Educated at Geneva, he later became a tutor to Count Bentinck's family near Leiden. It was during this time, from 1733 to 1743, that he undertook the studies of the organism Hydra that led, in October 1742, to the first permanent graft of animal tissues. His work covered the whole range of possibilities in tissue regeneration and grafting, but he was also engaged in other studies of the protozoa and c. 1760 he made the first observations of cell division. In 1750 he was entrusted with the care of the son and heir of the Duke of Richmond and in 1757, having escorted the young duke all over the European continent, he was able to retire in comfort to the country at Petit Sacconex.
The advice and counsel of Réaumur was of considerable support to him, bearing in mind that many including Voltaire found it impossible to accept that an animal could be multiplied by cutting it into pieces.
